Four Lives Lost in Bowie County Head-On Collision: Joel Ellestad, Payton Butler, Ty Byrd, and Dru Wilson Killed in Devastating US Highway 259 Crash.

BOWIE COUNTY, Texas — A heartbreaking crash in Bowie County claimed the lives of four young people early Saturday morning, leaving their families, friends, and communities mourning an unimaginable loss. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety (TXDPS), Joel Ellestad, 22, Payton Butler, 24, Ty Byrd, 20, and Dru Wilson, 23, of DeKalb were all killed in a violent head-on collision on U.S. Highway 259, approximately four miles south of DeKalb.

 

The fatal crash occurred at approximately 3:20 a.m. on July 11, 2026, when Texas Highway Patrol troopers responded to the scene. Preliminary findings indicate that a northbound Nissan Altima crossed the center line into the southbound lane, where it collided head-on with a Dodge Charger traveling in the opposite direction.

 

Authorities said the three occupants of the Dodge Charger—Joel Ellestad, Payton Butler, and Ty Byrd—sustained catastrophic injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Nissan Altima, identified as Dru Wilson, also suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

 

The tragic collision has left multiple families grieving the sudden loss of loved ones whose lives were cut short far too soon. As the community comes together in support of those affected, many are remembering the victims for the lives they lived, the memories they created, and the lasting impact they had on those around them.

 

The Texas Department of Public Safety continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. At this time, no additional information has been released as authorities work to determine exactly what led to this devastating tragedy.
