Two People Killed in Crash Involving Semi-Truck and Pickup on I-20 Frontage Road Near Merkel

MERKEL, Texas — A Sunday evening collision involving a semi-truck and a pickup truck towing a trailer has claimed the lives of two people in northeast Merkel, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS).

The fatal crash happened at approximately 7:41 p.m. on the I-20 frontage road near Exit 269, where emergency crews responded to a serious wreck involving two vehicles.

Pickup Truck and Semi-Truck Collide

According to preliminary information released by DPS, the crash involved a pickup truck pulling a trailer and a semi-truck traveling in the same area.

Investigators said the pickup was attempting to merge in front of the semi-truck but did not leave enough space between the two vehicles. As the vehicles moved through the roadway, the trailer attached to the pickup struck the front of the semi-truck.

Following the impact, the pickup truck lost control, skidded away from the roadway, and overturned.

The collision caused significant damage and prompted a response from emergency personnel, including law enforcement, firefighters, and medical responders.

Two Occupants Killed

Both occupants of the pickup truck were pronounced dead at the scene.

DPS identified the victims as:

• Charles Murray, 80, of Coldspring, Texas
• Deborah Murray, 67, of Coldspring, Texas
