Suspicious Death of 53-Year-Old Colorado Springs Man Investigated as Homicide

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — A suspicious death investigation on the southeast side of Colorado Springs has been upgraded to a homicide investigation after authorities determined the victim suffered an apparent gunshot wound to the head, according to the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD).

The victim has been identified as 53-year-old Cody Applin by the El Paso County Coroner’s Office.

Authorities initially responded to the incident as an unattended or suspicious death before additional investigative findings revealed evidence indicating that Applin’s death may have been the result of a violent crime.

Officers Respond to Delta Drive

According to CSPD, officers were dispatched shortly before 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 17, to the 2700 block of Delta Drive in southeast Colorado Springs following a report of a suspicious death.

When officers arrived at the location, they discovered a deceased individual. At the time of the initial response, investigators said there was no immediate cause of death that could be determined.

Due to the circumstances surrounding the discovery, CSPD detectives began an investigation while working alongside the El Paso County Coroner’s Office to determine what happened.

Investigation Reveals Apparent Gunshot Wound

As detectives from the CSPD Homicide Unit continued their investigation and evidence was examined, authorities discovered that Applin had suffered an apparent gunshot wound to the head.

Based on those findings, police determined the death should be investigated as a homicide.
