The Lubbock community is grieving the heartbreaking loss of Lakecha Collins, 60, and a two-year-old girl who tragically lost their lives in a devastating wrong-way collision on Interstate 27. Their sudden passing has left families, friends, and loved ones facing unimaginable pain as they mourn two lives taken far too soon in a crash that shocked the community.

The fatal collision happened Thursday evening, July 23, when the Lubbock Police Department responded to reports of a wrong-way driver traveling along I-27. Moments later, officers arrived at the 6600 block of the interstate and discovered a horrific crash involving three vehicles, with two of them engulfed in flames.

In the middle of the chaos, first responders rushed to save those trapped inside the burning vehicles. A Lubbock police officer bravely pulled a three-year-old child from one of the vehicles, suffering minor injuries during the rescue effort. The child was later transported to University Medical Center with serious injuries.

Despite the courageous efforts of emergency crews, the two-year-old girl was pronounced dead at the scene. Lakecha Collins, who was a passenger in a vehicle involved in the crash, also died at the scene from injuries sustained in the collision.

According to investigators, the crash began when a passenger vehicle driven by Oscar Hernandez Sotelo Jr., 29, was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of I-27, leading to a devastating chain reaction involving two other vehicles. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision, including whether speed and alcohol contributed to the tragedy.

As loved ones remember Lakecha Collins and the young child, they are holding onto the precious memories, laughter, and moments they shared with them. Two lives that brought love and joy to those around them will never be forgotten.

May Lakecha Collins and the little girl rest peacefully. Their memories will continue to live on in the hearts of everyone who knew and loved them.
