The heartbreaking loss of Crystal Broadus, 44, has left her family, friends, and community mourning a devoted mother whose life ended in a devastating act of domestic violence. Despite taking every possible step to protect herself and her four children, Crystal’s journey was tragically cut short in an incident that serves as a painful reminder of the dangers many victims continue to face even after seeking legal protection.
According to investigators, Crystal had courageously separated herself from her husband of nearly ten years, William Eugene Broadus, and had obtained a court-issued Protection From Abuse order. She had also sought temporary refuge in a hotel in an effort to keep herself and her children safe. Sadly, those precautions were not enough to prevent the unimaginable tragedy that unfolded on Tuesday afternoon.
Authorities say that shortly before 4 p.m., while traveling in an SUV near Elliot Street and West Barivista Drive in Penn Hills, William allegedly opened fire inside the moving vehicle, fatally shooting Crystal. The vehicle then veered out of control and crashed into the side of a nearby residence. Emergency responders arrived quickly but found both Crystal and William deceased inside the wreckage in what investigators believe was a domestic murder-suicide.
Crystal will be remembered not for the violence that claimed her life, but for the love, strength, and determination she showed as a mother dedicated to protecting her children. Her courage in seeking safety reflected her unwavering commitment to giving her family a better future.
