The Stanly County community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Stella Redfearn Dase, 60, of Albemarle, whose life was tragically cut short in a devastating three-vehicle collision on the morning of Wednesday, July 29, 2026. A dedicated Stanly County Public Transportation bus driver, Stella was pronounced dead at the scene after the crash on US 52 at Salisbury Avenue. Her sudden passing has left family, friends, coworkers, and countless passengers grieving the loss of a compassionate public servant who faithfully dedicated herself to safely transporting members of her community.
According to the Albemarle Police Department, the crash occurred at approximately 6:45 a.m. when a southbound Jeep struck an object in the roadway. Investigators say the impact caused the Jeep to lose control, cross into the northbound lanes, and collide head-on with the public transportation bus driven by Stella. Moments later, a Ford pickup traveling behind the bus struck its rear, adding to the severity of the incident. The Jeep driver sustained serious injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.
Authorities have since located the vehicle believed to have lost the roadway object. Dustin Kendall, 37, of New London, has been charged with Failure to Secure Load and Expired Registration as the investigation continues.
