The West Virginia community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Leo Basile, 57, of Arthurdale, who tragically lost his life in a helicopter crash Friday morning in the Huntersville area of Pocahontas County. Basile, an experienced pilot, was the sole occupant of the privately owned Sikorsky S-76D helicopter when it crashed near 6755 Huntersville Road in Marlinton. He was pronounced deceased at the scene, leaving family, friends, and colleagues grieving an unimaginable loss.
According to the West Virginia State Police, the crash occurred at approximately 7:45 a.m. on Friday. Preliminary findings revealed that the aircraft, bearing tail number N93RT, was owned by Waco Oil & Gas Co., Inc. and was being operated by Basile at the time of the incident. Authorities confirmed that no other individuals were aboard the helicopter.
Emergency responders from the West Virginia State Police detachments in Elkins and Marlinton, alongside the Pocahontas County Office of Emergency Management and the Marlinton Volunteer Fire Department, quickly arrived at the crash site. Despite their efforts, there was nothing that could be done to save the veteran pilot.
The Federal Aviation Administration has been notified and is working alongside the appropriate investigative agencies to determine what caused the tragic crash. Officials have stated that the investigation remains ongoing, and no official cause has yet been released.
