According to the Merced Police Department, officers responded to the 300 block of Brookdale Drive at approximately 1:30 p.m. to conduct a welfare check after concerns were raised about Michelle’s well-being. Investigators determined that she had suffered multiple lacerations, prompting the immediate launch of a homicide investigation.
Detectives identified Michelle’s daughter, Selena Bass-Vasquez, as the primary suspect. Authorities allege that after the incident, Bass-Vasquez fled in Michelle’s vehicle with her one-year-old son. A BOLO (Be On the Lookout) alert was issued, and later that day a member of the public spotted the vehicle at Rahilly Park and contacted law enforcement. Officers responded, safely recovered the unharmed child, and arrested Bass-Vasquez without incident. She was booked into the Merced County Jail on a murder charge, while Child Protective Services took custody of the child. The investigation remains ongoing.
