With heavy hearts, family, friends, and loved ones are mourning the loss of Willie Sanders, a 70-year-old Wichita, Kansas man whose life was tragically cut short in a devastating vehicle-pedestrian crash early Sunday morning in Rice County.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, the heartbreaking incident happened around 12:36 a.m. on K-42 after Sanders had already been involved in an earlier two-vehicle collision. Investigators said Sanders was standing in the northbound lane when a 1994 Buick Roadmaster approached the scene of the crash. The driver, Lucas MacLaren of Chase, attempted to stop but was unable to avoid striking Sanders.
Despite efforts to prevent the collision, Sanders suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. His unexpected passing has left those who knew him grieving the loss of a cherished member of their community.
Earlier that night, Sanders had been driving a 2001 Acura on K-14 when it collided with a 2017 Honda Pilot after attempting a left turn. Following that crash, Sanders was believed to have suffered only minor injuries before the tragic second collision occurred. The occupants of the Honda, Mark and Kerry Klein of Ellsworth, were transported to a hospital with suspected minor injuries, while MacLaren was also treated for minor injuries.
