The Phoenix community is grieving the unexpected loss of Richard “Stan” Fletcher, a 61-year-old beloved friend, worship leader, and man of faith who died after a hiking incident at South Mountain Park. Those closest to him are remembering Stan not only for the circumstances surrounding his passing, but for the kindness, faith, and encouragement he shared with everyone fortunate enough to know him.

Authorities said Fletcher was reported missing after he left home early Saturday morning for a hike and did not return. He had set out around 5 a.m., but his family became concerned when they were unable to reach him. Police learned that contact with him was lost around 2 p.m. after his phone battery died. His vehicle was later located near the Pima Canyon Trailhead on the east side of the park.

A cyclist discovered Fletcher unresponsive along the trail, and emergency crews from Phoenix Fire arrived and pronounced him deceased at the scene. Officials reported that there were no visible signs of injury or trauma. Due to challenging conditions and safety concerns, authorities delayed the recovery of his body until Sunday morning, when Phoenix Air Rescue assisted with the operation.

Investigators said the circumstances appeared consistent with a possible heat-related or medical emergency, and no evidence of foul play was found. The official cause and manner of death will be determined by the Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Friends and loved ones are now honoring Stan’s memory by reflecting on the lasting impact he made. A longtime friend shared that Stan was a cherished companion for nearly 20 years, with the two regularly attending Bible study, leading worship together, and strengthening each other’s faith. They had also hoped to record an album featuring Stan’s music.

As his family, friends, and community mourn this heartbreaking loss, they continue to celebrate the life of a man remembered for his generosity, devotion, and the love he shared with others.
