Silver Springs Man Killed in Rollover Crash on U.S. 50 Alternate Near Fernley

FERNLEY, Nev. — A 33-year-old Silver Springs man was killed Friday afternoon after a single-vehicle rollover crash along U.S. 50 Alternate south of Fernley, according to the Nevada State Police.

The victim was identified as Joeseph E. Cummings, who was pronounced dead at the scene after being ejected from his vehicle during the crash.

Crash Occurred Friday Afternoon

According to the Nevada State Police Highway Patrol, the fatal collision occurred at approximately 3:02 p.m. on July 17 on U.S. 50 Alternate, south of the 10-mile marker and near the Reno-Fernley Raceway.

Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene following reports of a rollover crash involving a single vehicle.

When troopers arrived, they found a blue Chevrolet Trailblazer that had overturned on private property after leaving the roadway. Medical personnel responded but were unable to save the driver, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Preliminary Investigation

Investigators said the preliminary investigation indicates that the Chevrolet Trailblazer was traveling northbound on U.S. 50 Alternate when, for reasons that remain under investigation, it drifted off the right side of the highway.

After leaving the roadway, the SUV struck a paddle marker, causing the vehicle to rotate across all lanes of travel. The Trailblazer then continued across the roadway, left the opposite shoulder, and entered private property, where it struck a fence before overturning.

The violent sequence of events resulted in extensive damage to the vehicle.

Driver Ejected During Crash

Authorities said Joeseph E. Cummings was ejected from the Trailblazer during the rollover.

Nevada State Police have not released information regarding whether he was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

Emergency medical personnel determined that Cummings had suffered fatal injuries and pronounced him dead at the scene.

Pickup Truck Struck by Debris

During the crash, debris thrown from the shoulder struck the front of a southbound white Chevrolet Silverado traveling on U.S. 50 Alternate.

Investigators said the pickup itself was not directly involved in the rollover.

The driver of the Silverado reported no injuries, and no passengers were reported to have been harmed.

Investigation Remains Active

The Nevada State Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision.

Investigators are working to determine what caused the Trailblazer to drift off the roadway before the rollover. Authorities have not indicated whether speed, distraction, fatigue, impairment, mechanical issues, or a medical emergency may have contributed to the crash.
