Man Found Dead in Pickup Truck at Athens Nissan Dealership; Investigation Underway

Authorities in Athens-Clarke County are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of a man whose body was discovered in the bed of a pickup truck at a Nissan dealership on Monday night.

According to officials, the deceased has been identified as William Craig Lee, 51, of Lawrenceville. The investigation is being led by the Athens-Clarke County Police Department in coordination with Athens-Clarke County Coroner Mike Eberhart, who confirmed that the body has been transported to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s State Crime Lab for an autopsy. The examination is expected to determine the official cause and manner of death.

Coroner Eberhart also revealed that, as of Wednesday, authorities had been unable to locate or notify any of Lee’s relatives, adding another challenge to the ongoing investigation.

The discovery was made shortly before 10:00 p.m. at the Nissan dealership located off Atlanta Highway in Athens. According to the incident report, an employee noticed a man lying motionless on top of wooden pallets in the bed of a pickup truck that was parked near the rear of the business. The employee immediately alerted emergency responders.

Athens-Clarke Police Officer Nehemiah Swing was among the first officers to arrive at the scene and immediately began performing CPR in an effort to revive the man. Officer Ryan Humphries also administered Narcan, a medication commonly used to reverse opioid overdoses, in case the man was suffering from a drug-related medical emergency.

Despite the lifesaving efforts by officers, emergency medical personnel who arrived shortly afterward determined that William Craig Lee had already died.

At this stage, investigators have not released any information indicating whether foul play is suspected. Officials have remained cautious, emphasizing that the investigation is still in its early stages and that conclusions cannot be drawn until the autopsy results are completed and additional evidence is reviewed.

As part of the investigation, detectives plan to obtain and examine security camera footage from the Nissan dealership. Surveillance video may help investigators determine when Lee arrived at the property, whether anyone else was with him, and what events occurred before his death.

Authorities are hopeful that the surveillance footage, combined with forensic evidence and the medical examiner’s findings, will provide answers regarding the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The Athens-Clarke County Police Department is urging anyone who may have information related to William Craig Lee’s movements before his death or who may have witnessed suspicious activity near the dealership to contact investigators.

The investigation remains active, and officials have stated that additional information will be released as it becomes available following the completion of the autopsy and further investigative work.
