ALTAMONT, Kan. — The communities of Altamont and Parsons are mourning the heartbreaking loss of Ryan J. Myers, 38, of Altamont, and Samantha A. Cahow, 30, of Parsons, who tragically lost their lives in a devastating motorcycle crash on Wednesday afternoon in Labette County. Their sudden passing has left family members, friends, and loved ones grieving an unimaginable loss while remembering the lives they shared and the memories they created.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, the fatal collision occurred at approximately 3:10 p.m. on U.S. Highway 59, about two miles northeast of Altamont. Investigators reported that a 1999 Harley-Davidson XL883 traveling north crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a southbound 2020 Jeep Gladiator. Despite the Jeep driver’s attempt to avoid the crash by steering to the right, the vehicles collided. The force of the impact ejected both Ryan Myers and Samantha Cahow from the motorcycle. They were pronounced deceased at the scene.
Authorities stated that neither Ryan nor Samantha was wearing a helmet or protective eye gear at the time of the crash. The Jeep’s driver, Shaun T. Powell, 55, of Fort Scott, sustained suspected minor injuries, while passenger Lucas A. Kelley, 27, of Fort Scott, was not injured. Both occupants of the Jeep were wearing seat belts.
As investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the collision, those who knew Ryan and Samantha are reflecting on the lives they lived rather than the tragedy that claimed them.
