The New Bern community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Michael Shawn Hoveland, 58, whose life was tragically cut short in a motorcycle crash on the evening of July 29 in Craven County, North Carolina. His sudden passing has left family, friends, and neighbors grieving the loss of a man whose presence touched many lives. According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the collision occurred at approximately 8:53 p.m. at the intersection of Airport Road and Old Cherry Point Road. Investigators reported that Michael was riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle eastbound when a Kia sedan, driven by 23-year-old Mariana Graybeal Libengood of New Bern, attempted to make a left turn onto Airport Road and failed to yield the right of way. The resulting collision ejected Michael from his motorcycle, and despite the rapid response of emergency personnel, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities have charged the driver with failure to yield and misdemeanor death by motor vehicle as the investigation continues.
