Smith, 82, who passed away on July 14 after courageously battling injuries sustained in a tragic two-vehicle crash on U.S. 280 in Tallapoosa County. His passing has left family, friends, and neighbors with heavy hearts as they remember a man whose life reflected kindness, dedication, and quiet strength. While the circumstances surrounding the accident remain under investigation, the sorrow felt by those who knew him is undeniable.
According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, the collision occurred on June 30 when the Toyota Tacoma driven by Hugh W. Smith was struck by a Lexus IS 250. The impact forced his vehicle off the roadway, where it collided with a tree. Despite receiving emergency medical care and being transferred to Baptist Medical Center South in Montgomery, Hugh sadly succumbed to his injuries two weeks later. His wife, Wanda A. Smith, 79, who was traveling with him, was also injured and continues to recover. The driver of the other vehicle, Cheaney M. Keel, 23, was likewise injured in the crash.
