A tragic crash that took the life of Sandra Beouy, 55, of Marion, has now led to serious criminal charges against another Marion resident. According to Grant County court records, Alexander Wimsatt was charged on July 21 with reckless homicide, criminal recklessness, and reckless driving in connection with the deadly head-on collision that occurred on May 8.
Investigators allege Wimsatt was driving at speeds exceeding 90 mph while attempting to pass multiple vehicles in a clearly marked no-passing zone on East County Road 450 North, northeast of Marion. Authorities say his Jeep crossed the center line and slammed head-on into an oncoming Jeep carrying Sandra as a passenger.
Sandra suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Both drivers were seriously injured and rushed to Marion Health for medical treatment.
According to the probable cause affidavit, crash data recovered from Wimsatt’s vehicle indicated he was traveling at more than 90 mph moments before impact. Data from the other Jeep showed it was traveling about 57 mph, while its driver reportedly braked and swerved in a desperate attempt to avoid the collision.
Wimsatt reportedly told investigators he was traveling between job sites, was running late, believed he was in a legal passing zone, and remembers regaining consciousness in a nearby field after the crash.
Authorities also confirmed that toxicology tests found no evidence of alcohol or drugs impairing either driver.
The case is now moving through the Grant County court system as Sandra Beouy’s family continues to mourn the devastating loss of a loved one whose life was cut short in a crash investigators say could have been prevented.
