The St. Francis de Sales High School community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of 18-year-old Anson Crandall, a beloved student who was found dead after an apparent drowning in a north Toledo pond. Crandall, who was set to begin his senior year, was remembered as a talented young man with a passion for creativity and the arts.
According to authorities, Crandall’s mother contacted police around 9 p.m. Saturday after he went missing following a fishing trip at a pond on Cleveland Street behind the Toledo Correctional Institute. She told officials that her son had gone to the pond earlier in the day and had not returned.
When Toledo Fire and Rescue crews arrived at the scene, emergency responders searched the water and located Crandall’s body submerged in the pond. He was pronounced dead at approximately 9:43 p.m. The circumstances surrounding his death remain under investigation as detectives and the coroner continue reviewing the incident.
Following the tragic news, St. Francis de Sales High School expressed deep sorrow over the loss of one of its students. School officials described Anson as a gifted visual artist and a valued member of the school community whose presence touched those around him.
A prayer service was scheduled at Gesu Catholic Church on Parkwood Boulevard for students, faculty, and members of the St. Francis community to come together in remembrance. Grief counselors were also made available to support those struggling with the devastating loss.
As family, friends, classmates, and loved ones grieve, Anson Crandall’s memory will continue to live on through the people whose lives he impacted.
