Pennsylvania State Police are actively investigating a heartbreaking hit-and-run crash that claimed the life of 42-year-old Benjamin Kachick of Lake City late Saturday night on Interstate 79. The tragic incident has left his family, friends, and the local community mourning while authorities continue searching for the driver responsible.
According to State Police in Girard, the crash occurred at approximately 11:10 p.m. on the southbound lanes of I-79 in McKean Township, just south of the Interstate 90 interchange near mile marker 176. A passing motorist discovered Benjamin lying on the roadway and immediately stopped to help. Several other drivers, including two nurses, also pulled over to render aid. Despite their quick response and compassionate efforts, Benjamin had already succumbed to his injuries before emergency responders arrived.
The Erie County Coroner’s Office later determined that Benjamin died from multiple blunt force trauma sustained in the collision. Investigators believe the vehicle involved may have been a Ford F-150, but the driver fled the scene without stopping to provide assistance or notify authorities. The southbound lanes of Interstate 79 remained closed for several hours as investigators carefully examined the scene and gathered evidence.
State Police are urging anyone who may have witnessed the crash or noticed a damaged Ford F-150 in the area around the time of the incident to come forward. Even the smallest detail could prove critical in identifying the person responsible and bringing justice to Benjamin Kachick and his loved ones.
