A tragic aircraft accident in northwest Iowa has claimed the life of 64-year-old Dennis Elkins of Erie, Colorado, as investigators work to determine what led to the crash of his privately built plane in rural Woodbury County near Lawton.
Woodbury County Sheriff’s officials confirmed Sunday that emergency responders were alerted Saturday evening after receiving a report that a small, single-occupant aircraft had crashed in the area. The search began after authorities learned the aircraft was overdue to reach its planned destination in Colorado.
Officials said Elkins was the pilot and only person aboard the Zenith CH-64 aircraft. Following the discovery of the wreckage, authorities confirmed that Elkins died from injuries sustained in the crash. He had been returning home in the aircraft he built himself after attending an aviation event in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.
Multiple agencies assisted in the search operation, using available information to locate the missing aircraft. Emergency crews worked through the area before ultimately finding the crash site and beginning the process of securing evidence for investigators.
