Amanda Brooke Williams, 43, of Valdese, has been identified as the victim in an ongoing suspicious death investigation, while Troy Allen Deese, 43, of Newton, has been charged with felony concealment of death after his arrest in Smyth County, Virginia. Authorities say Deese is awaiting extradition to North Carolina as investigators continue working to determine the circumstances surrounding Williams’ death.
The investigation began at approximately 3:17 a.m. on July 20, when deputies with the Burke County Sheriff’s Office responded to a property on Barus Pond Loop in Valdese following a report of a suspicious death. Upon arrival, deputies discovered Williams deceased inside a tent on the property. Due to the nature of the case, investigators requested assistance from the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, and the inquiry remains active.
On July 24, the Burke County Sheriff’s Office announced that Deese had been located and taken into custody in Smyth County, Virginia, with assistance from the Smyth County Sheriff’s Office. He was served with a warrant charging him with felony concealment of death and is currently being held pending extradition to North Carolina.
Multiple agencies have assisted with the investigation, including the Burke County Sheriff’s Office, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, the North Carolina Medical Examiner’s Office, Burke County EMS, Lovelady Fire Department, and the Smyth County Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities have not released additional details regarding the cause or manner of Williams’ death, and no other charges have been announced at this time. Investigators say the case remains active, and more information will be released as it becomes available.
