McDowell County, W.Va. — The community is mourning the loss of 43-year-old Travis New, whose life came to an unexpected end inside a McDowell County home on Thursday, July 30, 2026. As family members, friends, and those who knew him process the heartbreaking news, authorities continue their investigation while remembering a life that touched those around him.
According to the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded around 11:59 a.m. after receiving a report from a homeowner about a possible deceased person. The Welch Police Department requested that the sheriff’s office handle the investigation due to a conflict of interest. Upon arrival, investigators were informed that New, who had been staying at the residence as a friend, was discovered unresponsive inside the home.
Law enforcement officials secured and processed the scene, documenting evidence and speaking with individuals who had recently been in contact with New. Investigators reported finding suspected fentanyl and drug-related items in the area where New had been staying and among his personal belongings. Authorities stated that information gathered during interviews indicated possible signs of substance use.
New’s body was transported to the West Virginia Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for further examination. The official cause and manner of death remain pending until the completion of the autopsy and toxicology reports.
At this time, investigators have found no evidence of foul play and believe the circumstances may be consistent with a possible drug overdose. The case remains open as authorities await final medical findings.
