STARR COUNTY, Texas — Authorities have identified Noelio Garza Peña, a Houston resident, as the victim of a fatal two-vehicle crash that occurred Friday afternoon in Starr County, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS).
The collision happened at approximately 1:40 p.m. on FM 755, just south of FM 1017 near the community of La Gloria.
Preliminary findings from DPS indicate that a silver Dodge Ram pulling a trailer was traveling north on FM 755 when a gray Dodge 1500 heading south crossed into the northbound lane. In an effort to avoid a direct head-on collision, the driver of the Dodge Ram swerved. Despite the evasive maneuver, the southbound pickup struck the trailer being towed by the Dodge Ram.
Noelio Garza Peña, who was riding as a passenger in the Dodge 1500, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Dodge 1500 was taken to a nearby hospital with injuries that authorities described as non-life-threatening. The driver of the Dodge Ram was not injured and declined medical treatment.
The Texas Department of Public Safety continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash to determine what led to the vehicle crossing into oncoming traffic.
