TWIN FALLS, Idaho — As the community continues grieving the lives lost in the devastating mass shooting outside the newly opened In-N-Out Burger, Austin “AJ” Scott James has emerged as one of the courageous individuals credited with risking his own life to protect others. Although authorities have not officially identified the off-duty officer involved, family members and local residents say James was the officer who rushed toward the sound of gunfire, suffering serious injuries while confronting the suspected shooter.
According to his father, Marcus Scott, AJ made the split-second decision to move toward danger rather than flee when the shooting began. He was struck by gunfire and now faces multiple surgeries, rehabilitation, and a lengthy recovery. Family members expressed gratitude that he survived, crediting his wife, Connie, with helping save his life by applying a tourniquet before he was transported to the hospital.
AJ’s grandfather, Larry James, proudly described him as a third-generation law enforcement officer who was wounded while attempting to engage the gunman. Twin Falls Police Chief Matthew Hicks praised the actions of both the off-duty officer and an armed civilian, stating their intervention likely prevented even greater loss of life by forcing the shooter away from the crowded scene.
Authorities identified the suspect as 24-year-old Chad Williams, who died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after the attack. The shooting claimed the lives of three victims, including beloved community member Christopher “Toph” Claunch and In-N-Out employee Ashley, while seven others were injured.
The FBI continues assisting the investigation as detectives review evidence and interview witnesses.
