MATHEWS COUNTY, Va. — TURBOs Snowballs, a beloved shaved ice business that served the Mathews County community for eight seasons, has announced it is permanently closing following the devastating crash that claimed the life of a local woman on Saturday. The heartbreaking decision comes after the business’s trailer became detached from its towing vehicle, leading to the fatal collision.
In a heartfelt statement shared on social media, the family behind TURBOs Snowballs said they were on their way to work when the trailer broke free, resulting in an unimaginable tragedy. They described the decision to close the business as “incredibly difficult” and expressed profound sorrow for the victim’s family while asking the community to keep everyone affected in their prayers.
According to the Virginia State Police, the crash happened around 1:13 p.m. on New Point Comfort Highway when a trailer being pulled by a 2023 Chevrolet 2500 struck a 2002 Ford F-250 after becoming disconnected. The woman driving the Ford suffered fatal injuries at the scene.
Authorities identified the driver of the Chevrolet as 61-year-old Donald Turbin of King William. He has been charged with operating an uninspected trailer and failing to properly secure the load. The investigation remains ongoing.
The tragedy has deeply impacted the close-knit Mathews County community.
