The community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Lary L. Cave Jr., 55, of Cross Junction, Virginia, whose life was tragically cut short in a single-vehicle crash on July 28, 2026. His sudden passing has left family, friends, and all who knew him grieving the loss of a man whose life touched many. According to the Hampshire County Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred at approximately 3:05 p.m. on Northwestern Pike (U.S. Route 50) near the intersection of Sirbaugh Road, east of Capon Bridge. Preliminary findings indicate that Mr. Cave was traveling westbound in his 2009 Volvo when he was unable to stop for a vehicle that had slowed to make a turn. His vehicle left the right side of the roadway, struck a guardrail, and then collided with a large tree stump. Despite the rapid response of emergency personnel, Mr. Cave was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Lt. Stuart Davis and Chief Deputy D. Bowland responded to investigate the crash, with assistance from several local fire and EMS agencies. Authorities have confirmed that the investigation remains ongoing as they continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the collision.
