A heartbreaking tragedy has shaken the small community of Modoc, South Carolina, after 13-year-old Daryl Lowry lost his life during a violent incident at a local boat dock. South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) officials announced that Landen Austin Moore, 17, has been charged with murder in connection with the death. According to investigators, the fatal confrontation unfolded on Monday and involved Moore, Lowry, and another 16-year-old teenager.
An arrest warrant alleges that the encounter escalated into a physical altercation during which Daryl Lowry suffered knife lacerations. Investigators further claim that Moore and the 16-year-old intentionally held the 13-year-old underwater until he died. Authorities have not disclosed who allegedly inflicted the knife wounds, nor have they revealed what sparked the confrontation. Those details remain part of the ongoing investigation.
Following his arrest, Landen Austin Moore was booked into the McCormick County Detention Center. The 16-year-old involved in the incident was taken into custody by the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice. Officials have not identified the younger teen because of age protections and have not announced any criminal charges against that individual at this time.
SLED launched the investigation at the request of the McCormick County Sheriff’s Office and continues to gather evidence and interview witnesses. Authorities emphasize that the investigation remains active, and additional information could emerge as the case progresses.
The South Carolina Attorney General’s Office will oversee the prosecution.
